Why is it important to have your jewelry appraised?

Jewelry appraisal is more important than you may think. This is because it is easy to lose money through the loss and damage of jewelry, but appraisal and insurance can prevent that from happening. Here are some tips on how to ensure your jewelry is valued and described properly, as well as how to make sure you’ll be able to replace what you had without losing anything financially.

Why should you get your Jewelry Appraised?

Getting your jewelry appraised and knowing how it is valued is very important. Jewelry is not an inexpensive item to own and it could be devastating if yours was damaged, stolen, or lost. It can be hard to replace an item of jewelry due to the drastic financial and emotional loss . By getting it appraised you can get the proper insurance for your jewelry. The insurance will be able to cover the loss or any damage that may happen. It is important to know, however, a detailed description of the jewelry and how much the jewelry is truly worth so that it can be insured based on its true value and, in case of a loss, it can be replaced with identical piece.

Get a Second Opinion

Many places may offer a free appraisal after the purchase of your jewelry, for insurance purposes. As a professional, I do not agree with that. I think if you get a detailed statement of sale from them that is good enough to get it insured. All the insurance companies have always liked my three page detailed statement of sale. Yes, if you bought an item on a cruise or out of the country, it is always a good idea to have a second opinion and get a formal appraisal done. When you are getting an appraisal from where it was purchased it can possibly have a bias. Then if you want an appraisal go to professional appraisers

Keep Appraisals Up to Date

It is best to get it appraised approximately every five years. This is because over time the value of your jewelry as well as gemstones may fluctuate. If the appraisal is out of date and your jewelry gets lost or damaged, it can cause a financial loss. To prevent any financial loss and to ensure your jewelry protection, be sure to keep the appraisal and insurance of your jewelry up to date.
